On January 18, 2022, the station TNN Online presented the EEC program. The turning point for Thailand, with Mr. Polawat Pupipat as the MC, stated that the Provincial Waterworks Authority (PWA) plans to produce tap water to support the expansion of the EEC, starting as follows:

“Increasing the water supply capacity in the EEC area is one of the key infrastructures. In addition to focusing on developing water for consumption, It also creates confidence for investors to enter the EEC area. Therefore, the Provincial Waterworks Authority has planned to produce enough tap water until 2037.

According to the information from the Provincial Waterworks Authority or PWA, it is expected that in 2022 the EEC area will have a water demand of 389 million cubic meters per year, in 2027 it will increase to 472 million cubic meters per year, in 2032 it will increase to 565 million cubic meters per year and in 2037 it is expected that water demand will increased to 657 million cubic meters per year

Chonburi province is counted as an area the highest demand for water comes from tourism and service sectors. Therefore, PWA has invested in investments to support the expansion in the EEC Phase 1, which has been in operation since 2018, totaling 3 projects with a total budget of 5,720 million baht, namely:

The project to expand the water supply capacity of Chonburi Province, phase 1, with a budget of 2,868 million baht, the project to expand the water supply capacity of Rayong Province, phase 1, with the amount of 1,500 million baht, and the project to expand the water production capacity of Chachoengsao Province, phase 1, amount 1,352 million baht.
Mr. Wittaya Samsuwan, director of the Provincial Waterworks Authority, Region 1, said that at present, each project is progressing continuously, in progress which will be gradually completed during the years 2022 to 2023.

The project in Chachoengsao, It is expected to be completed in the second quarter of this year, adding 96,000 cubic meters of water per day to the system. Supporting the use of up to 480,000 people, the project in Chonburi, It will be completed in 2023, increasing the amount of water in the area by 15 percent or 96,000 cubic meters per day. To support the use of 480,000 additional people And the project at Rayong will be completed in 2023 to support the use of water in the U-Tapao Airport area and the eastern aviation city in the future It can increase the amount of water in the area by 30-40% or 48,000 cubic meters per day.

All three projects, when completed, will increase the amount of water entering the EEC area by 20 percent, or more than 240,000 cubic meters per day, from PWA’s current total production capacity of 1,137,120 cubic meters per day to meet the people’s water use needs until 2027. In addition, the Provincial Waterworks Authority has also prepared a plan for continuity and enough water to be used until 2037, which is now in the process of proposing the budget for the year 2023 ”

Implementation of the project in Chonburi, Phase 2 is expected to cost 3.2 billion baht and will increase the water production capacity by 192,000 cubic meters per day. Supporting the use of water for about 960,000 people, which is currently under study for the continuation of the Chachoengsao Provincial Water Supply Project Phase 2, it may take up to 3 years from this year to be able to propose a budget. Since it is a project that is linked to many agencies, then in the 4th year, construction will begin and it will take another 2-3 years to complete.

However, the risk point of the project to increase the water production capacity of the project in the EEC area is the limitation of the area. A large reservoir could not be built. Therefore, many small and medium-sized reservoirs have to be built. If these projects are stuck, they have to be delayed or unable to build. will affect all plans to increase production capacity affect the water supply in the future
In addition, if the water supply construction project phase 2 is not allocated as planned in 2023, the project will be delayed. Until the end of the 2037 plan, there may not be enough water supply.

Although the Provincial Waterworks Authority plans to adequately deal with water demand in the EEC area, the risks are still high. If the upstream agency takes care of building a reservoir operate late or the budget does not come on schedule, It may cause urban communities in the EEC to have a shortage of water supply.

Therefore, the government must closely supervise. Prevent big problems from happening in the future.
